Brazilian club Cruzeiro promoted after Ronaldo’s investment – The Zimbabwe Mail

SAO PAULO (AP) — Less than year after former Brazil great Ronaldo got involved with the club, Cruzeiro has made it back into the country’s top soccer league.

The Brazilian team clinched a top-four spot in the second division on Wednesday by beating Vasco da Gama 3-0 at the Mineirao Stadium. The top four teams in the league will all play in the first division next season.

“This is the icing on our cake. We worked a lot to deserve this,” Ronaldo told SporTV. “We will celebrate for a few days and then think about next year.”

The club, which is based in Belo Horizonte, was relegated in 2019 following a successful run over the last decade that included winning two of its four league titles in history. But then came a massive financial crisis, which police later said was fostered by the mismanagement of former executives. Analysts say Cruzeiro was at one time about 1 billion Brazilian reals (about $200 million) in debt.

Ronaldo, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and previously held the record for most goals scored at the tournament with 15, announced in December he had bought Cruzeiro’s soccer department. The move came after a new law was passed to foster investment in Brazilian soccer.

Local media reported that Ronaldo bought 90% of the shares for about 400 million Brazilian reals ($78 million).

Ronaldo soon promised dramatic changes in the club’s management and a return to the top league. He signed little known players and cut expenses to get Cruzeiro afloat.

Ronaldo is also an executive at Spanish club Valladolid, which was recently promoted as well.

“We are both in first division,” the Spanish club wrote on Twitter in congratulating Cruzeiro.

Pop singer Shakira to face trial over tax fraud in Spain – New Zimbabwe.com

Spread This News

By Associated Press

BARCELONA: A Spanish judge on Tuesday approved a trial for Colombian pop singer Shakira on charges of tax fraud.

Spanish prosecutors accused the entertainer in 2018 of failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($13.9 million) in taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014. Prosecutors are seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a hefty fine if she is found guilty of tax evasion.

Shakira, 45, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and rejected a deal with authorities to avoid going to trial. Her public relations firm has said that she has already paid all that she owed and an additional 3 million euros ($2.8 million) in interest.

The court based in the town of Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona said that Shakira will face six counts of tax fraud. The date for the trial has yet to be set.

The case hinges on where Shakira lived during 2012-14. Prosecutors in Barcelona have alleged the Grammy winner spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country, even though her official residence was in the Bahamas.

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, has been linked to Spain since she started dating soccer player Gerard Pique. The couple, who have two children, used to live together in Barcelona but recently ended their 11-year relationship.

Spain has cracked down on soccer stars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo over the past decade for not paying their full due in taxes. They were found guilty of evasion but both avoided prison time thanks to a provision that allows a judge to waive sentences under two years in length for first-time offenders.

For the Matchday 6 game of the 2022/2023 UEFA Nations League group A2, Portugal will receive Spain today at the Municipal Stadium of Braga. The hosts need a draw to finish as group leaders, while the visitors must win to overtake the lead and advance to the next round of the tournament. Here you will find all the information you need to know about this game, including how to watch it on TV or live stream in your country. In the United States, you can enjoy this game on FuboTV (free trial).

It will undoubtedly be the most interesting duel in this Group 2 of League A. The two strongest teams face each other looking to define who will stay with the first place. Portugal have the advantage since after their 4-0 victory against the Czech Republic they reached 10 points, 2 more than the Spanish, so the tie is enough for them to obtain 1st place.

Spain has it a little more complicated. Until Matchday 5 they were the leaders of group 2, but the surprise defeat against Switzerland (the first of the Swiss on Spanish soil) by 2-1, allowed the Portuguese to surpass them. Now they need to win against a difficult team, which is having very good performances and as visitors.

Spread the love

Hwange FC are just a game away from sealing their Premier Soccer League promotion after a 3-0 walkover score line over Ajax Hotspurs, who failed to travel to the Colliery Stadium on Saturday.

Chipangano need at least a point in their next game to mark their return to the top-flight.

The coal miners will play Indlovu Iyanyathela at the Colliery this weekend.

The club is sitting on the top of the ZIFA Southern Division One table with 82 points, five ahead of the second placed ZPC Hwange, with two games to play.

Hwange FC, who are coached by former Bulawayo City boss Try Ncube , have lost only two games so far and won 26 in the 32 matches played.

They were relegated three years ago in the previous campaign before the coronavirus pandemic affected the domestic league.

Meanwhile, Simba Bhora booked their place in the top flight after winning the ZIFA Northern Region Division One.

Sheasham and Green Fuel FC were promoted following their title triumphs in the Central and Eastern Region league, respectively.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe
