Summer Under the Stars: Marlon Brando
TCM, beginning at 6am
Catch a Classic!

It’s hard to think of a more impressive and acclaimed start to a feature film career for an actor than Marlon Brando’s incredible run of productions in the early 1950s, when he immediately earned his place in conversations about greatest actors of all time. Three of those movies — A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), Viva Zapata! (1952) and Julius Caesar (1953), which were just the second, third and fourth big-screen appearances for Brando and garnered him three consecutive Best Actor Oscar nominations — will be airing during today’s 11-title Summer Under the Stars celebration of the icon on Turner Classic Movies. Another Brando classic from that era, The Wild One (1953), is also airing, and while his performance as the rebellious leader of a biker gang in that film did not net him a nomination, it did have a large cultural impact. In ensuing decades, Brando’s career was a bit more hit-or-miss (though when he hit, he really hit), and other films featured today reflect a mix of those productions: Guys and Dolls (1955), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1956), Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), The Chase (1966), the short documentary Meet Marlon Brando (1966), Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967) and The Formula (1980).

Fit-again Rahul to lead India in Zimbabwe ODIs, Shikhar to be his deputy – Social News XYZ

Fit-again Rahul to lead India in Zimbabwe ODIs, Shikhar to be his deputy

Mumbai, Aug 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) India on Thursday named fit-again KL Rahul as the captain for the ODIs against Zimbabwe after the BCCI medical team cleared the batter to play in the three-match series, starting on August 18.

The 30-year-old Rahul has been out of action for a while with a sports hernia, with Covid-19 extending his stint on the sidelines.

Shikhar Dhawan was initially named as the captain for this tour. But with Rahul being given the go-ahead, he has been appointed as the captain with Dhawan taking deputy duties.

”The BCCI Medical Team has assessed KL Rahul and cleared him to play in the upcoming three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has appointed him the captain of the side and named Shikhar Dhawan as his deputy,” the BCCI said in a statement.

After the conclusion of IPL 2022, Rahul was scheduled to captain India in the home T20Is against South Africa but missed out owing to a groin injury. The spell on the sidelines was extended after it was revealed that the 30-year-old would require surgery. Consequently, Rahul missed the tour of England and Ireland.

The opener was scheduled to return at the just-concluded tour of West Indies and USA but following a positive Covid-19 result, the BCCI medical team advised him to rest. He has already been named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup at the end of this month.

All the three ODIs of India’s tour of Zimbabwe will be held at the Harare Sports Club.

India’s squad for 3 ODIs: KL Rahul (Captain) Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohd Siraj, Deepak Chahar.

Post-Mugabe-era film ‘President’ banned by Zimbabwe censorship board – TimesLIVE

“Zimbabwean law does provide for a challenge to the decision, initially through a request for full reasons, and subsequently court action; since the reasons given are not satisfactory.

“This case is highly significant to jurisprudence on freedom of expression, artistic freedom, and media rights; in Zimbabwe and beyond. The limitations to free expression that are permissible under domestic and international law are not, as far as we are concerned, applicable to the film President,” said Nielsson.

President premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year and won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award.

It is a sequel to Nielsson’s documentary Democrats which won best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival 2015. Democrats was initially censored in Zimbabwe, but in 2018 Nielsson won a three-year legal battle to lift the ban.

President was released across the US on the Public Broadcasting Service award-winning POV documentary series on August 8.
