From last leg of Q4 results to global cues, 10 things to know before opening bell – Zee Business

Indian equity benchmarks Nifty50 and Sensex are likely to start Friday’s session on a lower note, as indicated by Singapore Exchange Nifty futures, amid mixed moves across global markets as concerns remain about a looming US debt default.

Analysts expect some more consolidation in the index amid mixed indications.

“The focus should be on sectors/stocks that are consistent in their trend instead of betting on laggards. To reclaim positivity and momentum, we need a decisive close above 18,400 in Nifty and 44,000 in the banking index,” said Ajit Mishra, VP-Technical Research at Religare Broking.

Stay tuned on Zeebiz.com to find out what could impact your trade today. We have collated a list of the top 10 things to know that could impact the market:

  • SGX Nifty futures: Singapore Exchange (SGX) Nifty futures — an early indicator of the Nifty 50 index — were down 52.5 points or 0.3 per cent at 18,414 at the last count ahead of the opening bell on Dalal Street.
  • Wall Street: Overnight in the US, the three main equity indices ended sharply higher after a blowout forecast from Nvidia sent the chipmaker’s stock soaring and fueled a rally in AI-related companies, while investors watched for signs of progress in US debt ceiling talks. The S&P 500 climbed 0.9 per cent to end the session at 4,151.3. The Nasdaq surged 1.7 per cent to 12,698.1 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.1 per cent to 32,764.7.
  • Asian markets: Equities in most other Asian markets were mixed in early hours on Friday, with MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan up 0.4 per cent. Except for Japan’s Nikkei 225, which was up almost one per cent, all other key markets were in the red. China’s Shanghai Composite was down 0.5 per cent and South Korea’s KOSPI flat with a positive bias.
  • Rupee vs dollar: The rupee declined by four paise to close at 82.72 against the US dollar on Thursday, weighed down by the strength of the American currency in overseas.
  • Dollar index: The dollar strengthened for a fourth straight session on Thursday against a basket of major peers to touch a two-month high, as US data pointed to a resilient economy even after an aggressive rate hike cycle by the Federal Reserve. The dollar index rose 0.4 per cent at 104.3 after hitting 104.3, its highest since March 17.
  • Crude oil: Crude oil prices settled lower on Thursday after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak played down the prospect of further cuts in output by the OPEC+ grouping of top producers at its meeting next week. Brent crude futures settled down by $2.1, or 2.7 per cent, at $76.3 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) settled down by $2.5, or 3.4 per cent, at $71.8 a barrel.
  • Wheat Production: India is likely to harvest a record 112.7 million tonnes of wheat in 2023, the farm ministry said on Thursday, reiterating its previous estimate of 112.2 million tonnes despite lower crop yields due to unseasonal rains in February and March.
  • US debt ceiling update: US President Joe Biden and top congressional Republican Kevin McCarthy are closing in on a deal that would raise the US government’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling for two years. The deal, which is not final, would increase funding for discretionary spending on military and veterans while essentially holding non-defense discretionary spending at current year levels.
  • Q4 results: Companies such as Page Industries, IEX, Vodafone Idea and SAIL announced their January-March earnings on Thursday. Index heavyweights like Grasim Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra and Sun Pharma are among the corporates scheduled to report their Q4 numbers on Friday.
  • FII, DII flow: Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) net purchased Indian shares worth Rs 589.1 crore on Thursday whereas domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 338.44 crore, according to provisional exchange data.

Stock market today: Wall Street slips as stocks slump worldwide – YourCentralValley.com

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street slipped as stocks slumped worldwide Wednesday on worries about the strength of the global economy and inflation.

The S&P 500 fell 25.69, or 0.6%, to 4,179.83. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 134.51, or 0.4%, to 32,908.27, and the Nasdaq composite lost 82.14, or 0.6%, to 12,935.29.

Stock markets in Asia fell even more following discouraging data on manufacturing from China. The world’s second-largest economy has not been rebounding as strongly as many investors had hoped. That raises worries when economies around the world are contending with still-high inflation and much higher interest rates than a year earlier.

Wall Street has been able to weather such concerns pretty well recently, largely because of gains for a handful of tech companies and others getting swept up in the buzz around AI. The S&P 500 managed to close out May with a modest gain.

But some of the air seeped out of those big winners on Wednesday. Nvidia, whose chips are helping to power the surge into AI, dropped 5.7% for its first fall since it gave a monster forecast last week for upcoming sales.

Worries are also rising for the larger U.S. economy, which has slowed under the weight of much higher interest rates. The Federal Reserve has raised rates at a furious pace since early last year in hopes of getting inflation under control. But high rates work by hurting the economy and hitting prices for investments.

“We see this as a race for weakness between inflation and economic activity,” said Tony Roth, chief investment officer at Wilmington Trust.

Either inflation needs to break lower to return to the Fed’s target, which would allow it to go easier on interest rates, or the economy will fall into recession. Roth said both the economy and inflation have remained strong for longer than he expected: “It’s a very slow race to the bottom.”

A report released Wednesday morning bolstered expectations for the Federal Reserve to hike rates at least one more time. It showed employers advertised more job openings than expected, the latest signal of a job market that’s remained remarkably resilient.

While that’s good news for workers and for the economy, it also gives the Fed more leeway to keep rates high. A strong job market could keep upward pressure on workers’ wages, which Wall Street fears could keep inflation high.

“The increase in job openings is the worst news the Fed could have because that just puts more pressure on wages,” Roth said.

But stocks pared their losses in the afternoon after a Fed official hinted the central bank may hold rates steady at its next meeting in two weeks.

“Indeed, skipping a rate hike at a coming meeting would allow the Committee to see more data before making decisions about the extent of additional policy firming,” Fed Gov. Philip Jefferson said in a speech. But he said the Fed could still raise rates again at a later meeting.

Other, smaller portions of the economy have shown much more pain in the face of higher rates. A report on Wednesday morning suggested manufacturing in the Chicago region is contracting by much more than economists feared. .

The U.S. banking system has also come under pressure. The Fed-driven surge in rates means customers are pulling their deposits in hopes of making more in interest at money-market funds. Higher rates have also knocked down the values for bonds and other investments banks made when rates were low.

Bubbling behind all these worries is a still simmering drama in Washington about a potential default on the U.S. government’s debt.

President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are trying to wrangle enough votes to pass a deal to allow the U.S. government to borrow more money. Without it, the U.S. government could run out of cash to pay its bills as soon as Monday.

On Wall Street, Advance Auto Parts plunged 35 after it reported much weaker profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected. The retailer also said it expects pressures to continue through 2023, and it cut its full-year financial forecast and reduced its dividend.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise tumbled 7.1% after it reported weaker revenue for the latest quarter than expected.

Ford Motor fell 4.7% after CEO Jim Farley told the Bernstein Decisions Conference that electric cars will cost more to make than gas-powered vehicles until at least 2030.

In stock markets abroad, indexes tumbled 1.9% in Hong Kong, 1.5% in France and 1.5% in Germany.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 3.62% from 3.70% late Tuesday. It helps set rates for mortgages and other important loans that influence the housing and other markets.

The two-year yield, which moves more on expectations for Fed action, fell to 4.39% from 4.46%.

Russia-Ukraine war latest news: Putin’s forces claim they have … – The Independent

Moscow drone attack: Buildings damaged in wake of suspected strike

Russia’s defence ministry claimed on Wednesday that its forces had destroyed what it described as Ukraine’s “last warship” two days ago in the port of Odesa in a missile strike.

Ukraine’s navy declined to comment.

“The last warship of the Ukrainian navy, the Yuriy Olefirenko, was destroyed at a warship mooring in the port of Odesa,” defence ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a daily briefing on the war.

He said the vessel had been hit with “high-precision weapons” – a phrase he uses to mean missiles – on May 29, but gave no further details.

Oleh Chalyk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian navy, said he would not respond to any assertions made by Russia. The Ukrainian navy will not disclose any information about losses during the war, he added.

Earlier, Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone sparked a fire at an oil refinery in southern Russia and shelling hit a Russian town close to the border for the third time in a week, damaging buildings and setting vehicles ablaze.

Only 500 residents left in Bakhmut

There are only around 500 people left living in Bakhmut, according to the city’s mayor Oleksii Reva.

This is compared with the 70,000 people who lived in the eastern Ukrainian city before the war with Russia.

Bakhmut has been subjected to heavy fighting over the last year, with both Ukraine and Russia claiming they have control of the city.

Dutch prime minister says EU should sanction Russians involved in child abductions

The EU is looking into broadening its sanctions against Russia so they target Russians involved in child abductions from Ukraine.

Dutch prime minsiter Mark Rutte said: “The 11th package of sanctions we are working on includes the option to go after those responsible for child abductions.”

Speaking in a joint conference at The Hague with Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki, he added: “That’s something we are working on. The other point of focus is sanction circumvention. Making it possible to go after the people responsible.”

An Iraqi citizen fighting with Russia’s Wagner mercenary group was killed in Ukraine last month, Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Wednesday.

Abbas Abuthar Witwit, the first confirmed case of a Middle East native dying in the conflict, died on April 7, a day after arriving at a Wagner hospital in the Russian-controlled, eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, the RIA FAN news site earlier reported.

Much of the fighting for Bakhmut was done by convict fighters, recruited by Wagner from prisons on the promise of a pardon if they survived six months at the front in Ukraine.

Prigozhin told news agency Reuters that Witwit, who he recruited from prison, was wounded in Bakhmut before he died. Prigozhin previously said he had lost 20,000 of his men in the conflict as a whole.

Macron says war crimes trial may have to take back seat as Putin negotiations are priority

Emmanuel Macron says negotiations with Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine may have to take priority over war crimes charges against him.

The French President says it might not be possible to send Putin for a war crimes trial at The Hague because he is the only person the west can negotiate with to end the war.

Delivering a speech in which he tackled a wide range of issues at the EU leaders conference in Moldova, Macron said: “If in a few months to come we have a window for negotiations, the question will be arbitrage between a trial and a negotiation, and you have to negotiate with the leaders you have de facto, and I think negotiations will be a priority … You can put yourself in a position where you say: ‘I want you to go jail but you are the only one I can negotiate with’.”

But President Macron also said that evidence against Russia and its leaders should be gathered and assembled in the meantime.

French President urges NATO to provide ‘Israel-like’ security to Ukraine

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has urged NATO to provide Ukraine with“tangible and credible” security as it continues to battle Russia.

ICYMI: New US aid package for Ukraine will total about $300 million and include munitions for drones

A U.S. military aid package for Ukraine that is expected to be announced this week will total up to $300 million and will include additional munitions for drones, U.S. officials said Tuesday. The drone ammunition comes after new attacks by unmanned aircraft targeted Moscow.

There has been no suggestion that U.S.-made drones or munitions were used in the recent attacks on Moscow, and U.S. officials have repeatedly said that Ukraine has agreed not to use any American-provided weapons for attacks on Russian soil. The Kremlin blamed Kyiv for Tuesday’s attack, but Ukrainian officials had no direct comment.

But the new aid package comes at a tense moment in the war. The latest drone attack on Moscow follows Russia’s seizure of the eastern Ukrainian city Bakhmut after a nine-month battle that killed tens of thousands of people. Ukraine is also showing signs that its long-awaited spring counteroffensive may already be underway.

Khaps hold mahapanchayat today amid wrestlers’ protest – Hindustan Times

Jun 01, 2023 12:18 AM IST

“A mahapanchayat’ will be held in Soram village on Thursday to discuss the ongoing protest by wrestlers.” said Tikait

Representatives of khaps or clan-based groups from outfits in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab Rajasthan and Delhi will meet in Muzaffarnagar on Thursday to discuss the ongoing protests by India’s top wrestlers against sexual harassment, senior community leaders said, the first signs of a new mobilisation to back the protracted stir.

Naresh Tikait (ANI)

Naresh Tikait (ANI)

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Naresh Tikait said a mahapanchayat will be held in Muzaffarnagar’s Soram village on Thursday to discuss the protest by wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over charges of intimidation and sexual harassment.

Tikait’s comments came a day after he convinced Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, Rio Games bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, and double World Championship bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat — they have 45 senior international medals between them — to hold off on immersing their medals in the Ganga amid high drama in Haridwar.

“A mahapanchayat’ will be held in Soram village on Thursday to discuss the ongoing protest by wrestlers. Representatives of different khaps from UP, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi will participate in it,” Tikait said.

. At least 50 khaps are likely to participate in the event, said a person aware of developments.

“The wrestlers took an emotional decision on Tuesday to immerse their medals and it was our duty to stop them. The khaps will meet on Thursday to discuss the future of protest. The struggle will still be led by the wrestlers and all khaps and farmer unions will support them to the hilt,” Chaudhary Surender Solanki, president of Palam 360 khap in Delhi, said.

Solanki will attend the congregation on Thursday while wrestlers will skip it. “The wrestlers won’t be part of this,” he added.

General secretary of Sarv Khap, Subhash Baliyan, said that the meeting would discuss the police action against protesting wrestlers.

Thursday’s meeting and another planned event later this week indicate that community leaders were considering throwing their weight behind the stir. The developments came a day after unprecedented scenes on the banks of the Ganga in Haridwar that saw wrestlers breaking down in a huddle played out on live television. Malik and Phogat sat clasping their box full of medals while their spouses, wrestlers Satyavrat Kadian and Somveer Rathee, comforted them. Punia, one of the most successful Indian sportsmen in history — he has one Olympic medal, four World Championship medals, and two Asian Games medals — also broke down as their supporters formed a human chain to shield them from the huge crowd that had assembled at the ghat on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra.

All three tweeted passionate statements expressing their hurt, especially after the protests took an ugly turn on Sunday when they were detained by police from Jantar Mantar.“We feel why did we even win medals at Olympics or World Championships. Did we win medals to be dragged on the streets and be declared criminals?” they wrote.

The wrestlers have demanded the arrest of Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Gonda who has ruled Indian wrestling for 12 years, over allegations of sexual harassment of athletes, including at least one minor. Singh has denied the charges, hit back at the wrestlers, and even said that their medals are worth 15 each. Though he has been removed from WFI, which stands suspended, and two FIRs have been filed against him, the wrestlers have demanded that he be arrested immediately.

After sitting at Har Ki Paudi for 90 minutes on Monday evening, an intervention by Tikait led the wrestlers to hold off for now. Tikait, who took away the medals from the wrestlers and kept them in his custody, sought five days from the wrestlers to ensure their demands were met, though his strategy was not clear.

People aware of developments said that after leaving Har Ki Paudi around 7:30 pm on Tuesday, the wrestlers drove to Muzaffarnagar to meet BKU leaders. The wrestlers then drove back to Haridwar and spent the night there. “On Wednesday morning, they were still undecided whether to spend the next 4-5 days somewhere in Uttarakhand or go back to their villages. Ultimately, they decided on the second option,” said one of the persons cited above.

A second person in the know said that the wrestlers were advised by senior BKU leaders to go silent. Multiple calls to Punia and Malik went unanswered while Phogat’s number was switched off for the better part of the day.

The march to the new Parliament building on Sunday, when the wrestlers were manhandled, stopped and detained by police, coincided with Singh’s presence inside the House during the special proceedings while the wrestlers were camped at Jantar Mantar for 38 days demanding action. That sit-in at Jantar Mantar ended on May 28 when Delhi Police detained them and their supporters while they marched towards the new Parliament. The police also cleared the protest site and said they won’t allow wrestlers to return.
