I thought I will be part of the 2021 World Cup… but was on standby: Deepak Chahar – Firstpost – Firstpost

Indian pacer Deepak Chahar said that he has started training after recovering from the injury he sustained at the start of IPL 2022.

Chahar had missed the entire IPL, not playing even a single game for his side Chennai Super Kings after he injured his hamstring in February during the West Indies series in India.

However, Chahar has confirmed in an interview with New24 Sports that he has fully recovered from his injury. “I have recovered well. I am playing practice matches now. I am practicing in Chennai currently. My injury has been completely recovered.”

Chahar said that the last few months once he got injured were very difficult. Chahar has been out of action right since February 2022 and has not played domestic cricket either.

“It was a very difficult time. I had to decide if I wanted to get the surgery done once I was injured. I didn’t go for surgery as I wanted to play IPL. Subsequently, I had pain in my teeth and had to remove the wisdom tooth. I was taking three-four painkillers daily,” Chahar said.

Chahar was however confident about playing IPL after recovering from these issues. “Once I started playing after these issues, I thought I will play IPL. But then a stress fracture on my back was detected. And it takes at least four-five months to recover from a stress fracture,” he explained.

Chahar has been selected for the tour of Zimbabwe in August and he will look forward to making a comeback in the Indian colours.

“It has been six months since I played cricket. It is very difficult to make a comeback after six months. I was looking forward to the Zimbabwe tour for quite some time now, to be back in the blues,” Chahar said.

Chahar, however, said that his ultimate aim is to win the T20 World Cup down under, later in the year. But his selection for the T20 squad is uncertain considering the already tough competition amongst the fast bowlers.

“I was on standby last year as well at the 2021 T20 World Cup when I thought that I will be a part of the team. It’s not in my hands if I will be on the team or not. I am working hard on my bowling as well as my batting and that is the only thing in my hands.

“I will try to score runs when I get a chance to bat and will try to pick up wickets when I get an opportunity to bowl. That is what I can do from my end.”

Interestingly, Chahar said that he is feeling better than his injuries earlier. He also feels he is bowling better than earlier.

While he is expected to be in the starting XI against Zimbabwe, it will be worthwhile to see if he finds a place in the T20 World Cup squad, in an already constrained for space environment.

Chakabva To Lead Zimbabwe In India ODI Series – Barron’s

Regis Chakabva celebrates his century for Zimbabwe in a one-day international victory over Bangladesh in Harare on August 7, 2022.

Jekesai NJIKIZANA

Regis Chakabva will skipper Zimbabwe in three one-day internationals against India in Harare from August 18 as regular captain Craig Ervine has a torn hamstring.

The top-order batsman-cum-wicketkeeper captained Zimbabwe to a winning 2-0 lead over Bangladesh last Sunday in another ODI series, before a sprained hand ruled him out of a final-match loss.

Zimbabwe will face India in a positive mood after 2-1 ODI and Twenty20 series victories over Bangladesh this month.

Pakistan-born Sikandar Raza, who starred in the ODI series, is part of a 17-man squad named on Thursday by recently hired coach Dave Houghton.

His unbeaten knocks of 135 and 117 played pivotal roles in building a 2-0 lead over the Bangladeshis through two brilliant run chases.

Since replacing India-born Lalchand Rajput as coach in June, Houghton has steered Zimbabwe to nine wins in 11 ODI and T20 matches.

Apart from Ervine, Zimbabwe will be without Blessing Muzarabani, Tendai Chatara and Wellington Masakadza, all injured, and unavailable former skipper Sean Williams against India.

The series, part of the Cricket World Cup Super League, will be staged at the Harare Sports Club.

Squad

Ryan Burl, Regis Chakabva (capt/wkt), Tanaka Chivanga, Bradley Evans, Luke Jongwe, Innocent Kaia, Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Clive Madande, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, John Masara, Tony Munyonga, Richard Ngarava, Victor Nyauchi, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Donald Tiripano

KL Rahul to captain India in Zimbabwe after being passed fit – ESPNcricinfo

KL Rahul has been drafted in as the 16th member of India’s squad that will tour Zimbabwe for three ODIs between August 18 and 22. Rahul will also captain the squad, with Shikhar Dhawan, who was earlier set to lead, now named his deputy.
Rahul’s inclusion follows a clearance from BCCI’s medical team that has earlier advised a two-week post-Covid-19 recovery time frame. Rahul is believed to have contracted the virus a week prior to his scheduled departure for the West Indies mid-July, for the five match T20I-series. Last week, Rahul was named in India’s full-strength squad for the Asia Cup that will be held in UAE from August 27.
Since recovering from Covid, Rahul has had to pass the mandatory cardiovascular test following which he has slowly amped up his training routine. ESPNcricinfo understands Rahul has resumed batting and training full tilt over the past week, following which he underwent a medical assessment. Prior to contracting Covid, Rahul had been recovering from a surgery he underwent for sports hernia in Germany in June.

Rahul hasn’t played any competitive cricket since IPL 2022, where he led debutant-franchise Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs. He was initially set to be part of the England tour party for the fifth Test in Birmingham in early July, but had to pull out due to a groin strain, which was later revealed as a sports hernia.

This will be Rahul’s second stint as India captain. His first stint was far from memorable, with India being blanked 3-0 in the ODIs in South Africa earlier this year.

Injury scare for Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar, who is also part of the squad, suffered an injury scare on Wednesday. In the midst of a stint with English county Lancashire, Washington landed heavily on his left shoulder after diving from mid-on to stop a drive in a Royal London Cup fixture against Worcestershire. He left the field immediately and didn’t take any further part in the match as a precautionary measure. Washington is likely to link up with India’s squad directly in Harare after Lancashire’s clash against Hampshire on Sunday.

Like Rahul, Washington too has had a run of injuries this year. In February, he was sidelined from the West Indies and Sri Lanka T20Is at home due to a hamstring injury. During the IPL, he injured his bowling hand while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He then underwent a month-long rehabilitation at the NCA in June and it is understood he had a shoulder issue to sort out before making his County Championship debut.

The Indian team will depart for Zimbabwe later this week. All three ODIs will be played at Harare Sports Club, with the hosts on a high after an impressive 2-1 win over Bangladesh. While the series is part of the ICC World Cup Super League and massively important for Zimbabwe – finishing in the top eight on the Super League table means direct qualification to the World Cup – India qualify for next year’s World Cup automatically by virtue of being the hosts.

Updated India squad: KL Rahul (captain) Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar.
