Eagles delights in Alliance Health sponsorship – NewsDay

ZIMBABWE Cricket franchise Eagles believe their ground-breaking partnership with medical insurance giant Alliance Health will provide the perfect tonic for their teams as they seek to establish themselves as a dominant force on the domestic scene.

Eagles received a financial boost ahead of the upcoming season after Alliance Health unveiled a sponsorship package worth US$19 000 for the Harare-based side on Tuesday.

Alliance Health were the team’s away kit sponsor last season, but have now gone a step further with a new deal which will see them getting naming rights to all the franchise’ teams which will now be known as the Alliance Health Eagles.

Eagles franchise general manager Wonder Chisango said the naming rights partnership with Health Alliance, which is the first of its kind in local cricket, will go a long way in aiding the development of the sport in the province.

He said the sponsorship will create a conducive environment for the Eagles squad which is aiming for a successful season across all three formats.

“We commend Alliance Health for having had the foresight of joining forces with us and, thereby, advancing the development of the game in the province. The financial injection will also help the administration to expose players to additional materials that are over and above what they usually access. That will create an environment that will enhance performance thereby helping the teams reach their goals-that’s winning trophies,” Chisango said.

“As Eagles Cricket, we pride ourselves as the biggest brand in the country and our long-term objective is to become a true global cricket brand. Forging ties with Alliance Health, who have a reputation of offering 21st Century healthcare both in Zimbabwe and internationally; through fast, professional and personalised service, takes us closer to our desired goal,” he said.

Alliance Health general manager Millicent Banda said the partnership with Eagles is in line with their organisation’s passion for wellness through sport. “We are a health-conscious institution and we believe it is our mandate to support the advancement of wellness through sporting activities such as cricket,” Banda said.

“We are excited to come aboard with the naming rights to the Eagles franchise, we have been working with the Eagles since 2020 when we sponsored their travel kit last year, so this year we decided to take the sponsorship up a little bit more.

“As a brand, as a company, we believe in developing communities and we believe in nurturing healthy active communities,” Banda said.

The colourful ceremony also saw the unveiling of the new look 2021/22 playing shirts. Coached by national team assistant coach Stuart Matsikenyeri, the Eagles will be led on the field by experienced opening batsman Chamu Chibhabha, who has retained the captaincy.

Inform wicketkeeper-batsman Regis Chakabva will provide some much-needed experience in the side which has a number of upcoming stars such as rising star Wesley Madhevere and Richard Ngarava.

File photo of Bangladesh team in action against Scotland in the Round 1 of ICC T20 World Cup 2021

It is a huge clash in Group B of the Round 1 of ICC T20 World Cup between Bangladesh and co-hosts Oman as a defeat can send group favourites Bangladesh packing. Mahmudullah’s team suffered a shock loss to Scotland in their first match after entering tournament on the back of winning T20I series against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand this year. Oman are sitting pretty on top of the group after their 10-wicket win over minnows Papua New Guinea. They ensured that Sri Lanka had a wobble in the warm-up games, and will be hoping to use all their learning and preparation from the past few weeks against Bangladesh too. If they manage to surprise the higher-ranked side, they will find themselves on two wins and in an excellent position to go through to the Super 12s. A loss will not be the end of their campaign.

Bangladesh look to get back on track against confident Oman – International Cricket Council

After a loss in their opening game, Bangladesh have another challenge coming up against co-hosts Oman in their Group B fixture.

Bangladesh were left with some difficult questions about their batting after Scotland consigned them to a loss on the opening day of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. They have little time to get their campaign back on track, as a defeat on Tuesday to Oman could knock a proud cricketing nation out of the tournament in the First Round.

Bangladesh were found lacking on a number of factors on Sunday: down on boundaries, chewing up dot balls and lacking in ways to attack both in the Powerplay and the death. They were just 25/2 in the Powerplay – a period of play that is proving to be key in matches in the region in recent weeks.

The team have won series against Zimbabwe, Australia and New Zealand this year, though, so will be backing themselves to bounce back quickly.

M6: Oman v Bangladesh | Match Preview | T20 World Cup

Oman will be wary of the wounded Tigers, with the co-hosts themselves riding high after a dominant 10-wicket win against PNG in front of a home crowd.

A loss will not be the end of their campaign, though Oman were defeated by Scotland in the 2019 Qualifier, and won’t want to rely on a result in the third match.

  • Match: Oman v Bangladesh
  • Time: 18:00 local time on Tuesday 19 October
  • Venue: Oman Cricket Academy Ground, Al Amerat

Bangladesh‘s bowlers did a good job to reduce Scotland to 53/6, and came in for praise from their skipper. Spinners Mahedi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan were especially effective in drying up the runs and shared five wickets. However, there might be some shuffling in their batting order, with the opening pair coming under pressure.

Possible Bangladesh XI: Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Nurul Hasan (wk), Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman.

Mahmud Ullah – Bangladesh’s ‘humble’ captain who gives his all | T20 World Cup

Oman‘s mild concern will be that their middle order didn’t get a hit in the first match. Ayaan Khan, who did not bowl in the first game, could give them another left-arm spin option, with off-spinner Nestor Dhamba also on the bench.

Possible Oman XI: Zeeshan Maqsood (c), Aqib Ilyas, Jatinder Singh, Khawar Ali, Kashyap Prajapati, Naseem Khushi (wk), Mohammad Nadeem, Ayaan Khan, Sandeep Goud, Kaleemullah, Bilal Khan

Jatinder Singh: The Oman opener top-scored for his side with 73* off 42 balls against PNG. The knock included four sixes. He is also good on the sweep shot, so he will have a job to do against Bangladesh’s spin attack.

Liton Das: The Bangladesh opener’s strike-rate is especially high in the Powerplay, coming in at around 142 as against a career strike-rate of 125 in all T20s. In the UAE, where a good start has been key, his team will expect him to take on the responsibility. His role will also be important if Bangladesh are playing with an eye on the run-rate.

Captaincy pick – Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan surpassed Lasith Malinga’s record to become the leading wicket-taker (108) in Men’s T20Is during the opening encounter of the group stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup. The last time he played against Oman in 2016, Shakib bagged four wickets and gave away just 15 runs.

Despite his failure against Scotland, he will continue to bat in the top order and he can be backed to come good. The in-form Bangladesh all-rounder has picked 16 wickets in 13 T20I innings this year at an economy of 6.1 and his all-round threat makes him the top captaincy pick for this match.

Must-have – Bilal Khan

The left-arm pacer has been one of the most consistent players for Oman in recent times and he is definitely a must-have in all fantasy teams given his form and the context of the tournament. Bilal Khan picked up a couple of wickets in the tournament opener against Papua New Guinea and has an impressive bowling strike rate of 14.2 in 35 T20I innings.

Bangladesh win

If Bangladesh win they can move level on points with Oman and will very much be alive going into the final match of the round. If Scotland lose their earlier match against Papua New Guinea, all four teams would be level on two points, bringing net-run-rate firmly into the equation.

Oman win

If Oman win they should have done enough to secure themselves a spot in the Super 12s. Bangladesh would require Scotland to lose their final two matches while they themselves beat PNG to reach the next round.

What They Said

Mahmudullah, Bangladesh captain: “Our batting is a concern. We have to bat better. We have to play aggressive cricket, regardless of the situation. We have a deep batting line-up, with Mohammad Saifuddin at No.9. We may need to think over some changes.”

Zeeshan Maqsood, Oman captain: “We have to look at our fielding, and minimise our mistakes. Our catching is alright, but ground fielding has to be better, [we struggled] due to nerves. We can’t take it easy and we need to correct our mistakes.”

Cricket fans are already swooning to Scotland upsetting Bangladesh in a Round 1 fixture on Sunday, October 17. An upset is always entertaining more so because it is something that happens against expectations. On one side, the winning team erupts into jubilation, ecstasy and joy while shock runs through the veins of the side who unfortunately find themselves on the wrong side of the result. Upsets are always something entertaining and T20 World Cups in the past have witnessed similar results in the past. Let us take a look at the five such thrilling upsets in the past T20 World Cups as they continue to remain etched in the history of the competition.

1) Zimbabwe beat Australia (T20 World Cup 2007): It was one of the first known upsets in the very first edition of the T20 World Cup. The South Africa edition of the tournament had its own excitement and uncertainty and Zimbabwe added to the thrill by beating the reigning 50-over champions Australia. The African side put up a good bowling performance, restricting the batting-heavy Australian side to just 138/9 in their 20 overs. Brendan Taylor then led the chase for Zimbabwe, scoring 60 runs off just 45 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes to ensure his side went home with full points and a memorable win, which would go down in Zimbabwe’s cricket history as being one of the best. 2) Afghanistan beat West Indies (T20 World Cup 2016): Competing in their second T20 World Cup, Afghanistan gave the world a taste of the surprise they brought into cricket by defeating heavyweights West Indies. The victory was all the more special and comprehensive as it was a low-scoring total and a team effort saw Rashid Khan and co pull off a sensational win against the eventual champions of the competition. Batting first, they could manage just 123/7 and West Indies were firmly on top to clinch the win in Nagpur. But that wasn’t part of the Afghanistan script as they took wickets in regular intervals, eventually restricting the T20 specialists 117/8 winning the contest by six runs.

3) Hong Kong beat Bangladesh (T20 World Cup 2014): Well, Scotland’s win over Bangladesh wasn’t the first time that the Asian side has been handed an upset defeat. Earlier in the 2014 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh were surprised by a Hong Kong side, who went on to win a contest by the narrowest of margins (two wickets). Batting first, Bangladesh were shot out for 108 runs with Hong Kong’s Nadeem Ahmed scalping four wickets for just 21 runs. In response, Hong Kong found themselves in trouble at 50/5, but they held their nerve to ensure that they got over the line at the end.

4) Netherlands beat England (T20 World Cup 2009): In just the second T20 World Cup in 2009, Netherlands went on to inflict an upset defeat on hosts England. England got off to a good start batting first, eventually posting 162/5 in their 20 overs. Netherlands though, made things interesting by losing wickets regularly in their chase, What they did well was to never fall behind and kept fighting, eventually winning the match in the last over with four wickets.

5) Scotland beat Bangladesh (T20 World Cup 2021): Well, this would not be forgotten soon. Bangladesh walked into this clash as the overwhelming favourites to win this one and even go through easily to the Super 12 stage. But a certain Chris Greaves stood in their way. He blasted 45 quick runs off just 22 balls and helped Scotland reach a decent 140/9 at the end of 20 overs, He was not done for the night yet. Returning with the ball, he scalped the crucial wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim to derail Bangladesh and eventually thwart their run-flow, choking them out by six runs.
