Ranking Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s biggest big-money flops – iharare.com

Ranking Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s biggest big-money flops

NOW, I refuse to flat out say that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a bad actor, after all, you don’t make movies that gross a combined US$ 4 billion with no discernible talent.

However, I have noticed a trend.

The name Dwayne Johnson is one of the most bankable properties in the movie business, with most of his flicks either making big money on the box office or spurning big sequels and franchises. This is not to say that all these movies are any good, as some are either overrated or just plain trash.

Take his latest movie “Red Notice”, the action-comedy recorded the biggest opening on Netflix on the day of its release (November 12) on the streaming service.

At the time of publication, the film had grossed over US$ 198 million on the box office after having been released a week earlier.

There is already talk of a sequel, a franchise even alongside co-stars Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, and all these is juxtaposed to the film having a weak villain, tame storyline and suffering from the one-dimensional performances of its two lead actors Johnson and Reynolds.

The two have over the years been guilty of playing the same character in all their movies, albeit with different outcomes.

Reynolds has mastered the art of playing the charming and fast-talking lead, and it usually works.

He chooses his roles well, while Johnson often needs someone to carry him.

Fortunately for Johnson, he makes more money on the box office, and is a bigger draw, than Reynolds or any of his other co-stars.

Rather than go into detail on the colossal disappointment that is ‘Red Notice’ in a run-of-the-mill review, I decided to focus on its biggest draw (Johnson) and run down some of the big-money flops of his career.

Below are seven of Johnson’s biggest flops ranked from least to worst, ranked on quality, or lack of, rather than revenue.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel (US$962m & US$800m)

This remake of a 1995 classic that starred the late Robbins Williams owes its success in part due to the success of the original, and also due to the star power of its two main characters Johnson (Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone) and Kevin Hart (Franklin “Mouse” Finbar).

The film follows a group of High school outcasts, who get transported into the game Jumanji that they find while in detention.

It’s a reverse of the original, where things came out of the game, and lacks the charm, solid storyline, and comedic performance of the late Williams.

The does have its moments, with Jack Black (Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon) and Karen Gillian (Ruby Roundhouse) the only bright spots of the entire movie.

Hart is at his worst as the talkative sidekick to Johnson’s action hero character.

While the two are not bad per se, these are performances we have seen a dozen times before from other movies.

Their star power does force the studio to make a sequel, as the remake grosses US$962 million from a budget of roughly US$90 million.

GI Joe Retaliation (US$375 million)

After the critical success that was the 2009 “G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra” movie, SpyGlass Entertainment and Hasbro went all out to ensure that the sequel was an even bigger success.

after original star Channing Tatum allegedly refused to sign on for the sequel, the plan was to make Johnson the focal point and even bring in action legend Bruce Willis for a surprise cameo.

Tatum got killed off early in the movie.

This movie was right up Johnson’s ally and didn’t really require him to do more than his one-dimensional act.

Surprisingly the film score 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and suffered from its insanely stupid plot, generic fight sequences, and cliché riddled dialogue.

Hasbro has not given up on the franchise and did a much better job in this year’s “G.I Joe Origins: Snake Eyes”.

While that film (Snake Eyes) flopped making US$40 million on the box office, it should give you a better understanding of Johnson’s star power that G.I Joe: Retaliation made US$375 million.

Skyscraper (US$304 million)

By 2018, studios had come to the realization that Johnson is a big draw and as such were more than willing to throw more money into the budget.

Here, this ‘Die hard’ knock-off had a budget of slightly over US$125million and doubles it in revenue and then some.

It’s quite sad that firstly writer and director Rawson Marshall Thurber fails to mask his attempts to copy the Die Hard movies, and also Johnson lacks the charisma that made Bruce Willis such a darling of the action genre.

Here Johnson stars as William “Will” Sawyer, a Marine veteran turned FBI agent, who lost his left leg below the knee during a job assignment.

Years after the incident, Johnson’s Sawyer character is hired to review security for the world’s tallest skyscraper.

He is joined by his wife and twin children, who then get trapped in the building when it gets attacked by a group of mercenaries.

Fire ensues and Sawyer is forced to leap into action and save both his family and the day.

The film mostly relies on visuals and as such required Johnson to do what he does best which is fight.

There is no witty dialogue and the antagonists are forgettable, both of which don’t do the film justice.

People seem to forget that the late Alan Rickman’s Hans Gruber was just as responsible for the success of the first “Die Hard” movie back in 1988.

It’s a cliché, but every great hero needs an equally good villain.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (US$760 million)

In Johnson’s defence, this movie was doomed for the get-go.

Johnson’s ego saw the former wrestler clash with Fast and Furious godfather Vin Diesel, with grapevine going so far as to note that the latter even had a clause in his contract that he does not lose a fight in the movie.

The “Hobbs and Shaw movie” also delayed the release of the most recent “Fast and Furious 9”.

All these factors did not stop the movie, which also stars Jason Stratham, from doing good business from a budget of US$200 million.

The movie itself had three glaring problems, with the first being its lack of authenticity.

While it was a Fast and Furious spinoff, it lacked any of the Fast and Furious tenets.

The only two people linking it to the franchise were Johnson and Stratham. The problem with this is that one is not the most beloved personalities in the franchise’s history, and the other was a blink- and-you-will-miss-it character at the time.

Johnson wielded way too much power, with Mr. Blockbuster turning the movie into some tribute to his culture.

Idris Alba’s Brixton Lore character was a one-note villain who was more suited for the henchman role rather than the main antagonist.

The writers did not do enough to flesh out any of the stories or the characters.

In the end, the only memorable thing about the movie was the two cameos from Johnson’s running buddy Kevin Hart (Air Marshal Dinkley) and Reynolds (Victor Locke).

Baywatch (US$117 million)

This is kind of cheating here!

Baywatch did not do good business in the conventional sense, but it is a Johnson flop that, at the time, was rumored to have a sequel in the works.

It is also another classic example of Johnson’s lack of acting chops.

The only thing memorable about this movie was the apparent lack of chemistry between the movie’s two leads Johnson (Mitch Buchannon) and Zac Efron (Matt Brody) and the surprise cameos by Baywatch icons David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.

The two play their original characters, Mitch Buchannon and Captain Casey Jean Parker.

The film was an attempted remake of the show Baywatch and almost doubled its US$65 million.

And now, for the worst of the litter.

Pain and Gain (US$86 million)

“Pain and Gain” is one of Johnson’s earlier works and in 2013 he wasn’t the draw he is today.

Still, this film has all the ingredients needed to make the Rock a bonafide star.

With Michael Bay in the director’s chair, Mark Walberg as a running buddy, and a modest budget of US$20 million, what could go wrong?

Well, in a word, everything!

In the time since its release, the word stupid movie has been used to describe it.

I mean it has been used a lot.

It took a very pertinent issue in America and real-life events and made a mockery out of them.

The performances of the film’s two leads Mark Walberg and Johnson are forgettable and most one-dimensional.

For these particular actors, it’s been the story of their careers.

I remember watching this particular movie and asking myself whether this is a movie about chasing the American dream or a flick about bodybuilder stereotypes.

The plot was simple enough, three bodybuilders Daniel Lugo (Walberg), Paul Doyle (Johnson) and Adrian Doorbal (Anthony Mackie) concoct a plan to kidnap a rich guy Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) and extort him for money.

Unfortunately, the three are not very smart, and as such disaster ensues.

The characters lacked development, the action is over the top and the laughs were few and far in-between.

Tooth Fairy (US$112 million)

This is a personal favourite of mine.

And the biggest reason is that it is my go-to movie whenever I argue with people on whether or not Johnson is a good actor.

For many years, it was a stain on his resume and was used as diss material in his WrestleMania feud with John Cena back in 2012.

Johnson stars as Derek Thompson, a minor league hockey player, who gets punished for his evil deeds against children and has to serve two weeks as an actual tooth fairy.

It’s your typical Disney movie, and the sight of a Dwayne Johnson with wings and a wand was comedy gold.

Unfortunately, that is as far as the laughs go.

Johnson doesn’t do comedy well, with “Tooth Fairy”, “The Game Plan” and “Central Intelligence”.

In the two other movies, Johnson is saved by solid performances by his co-stars Madison Pettis and Kevin Hart respectively.

Both movies also do well, despite being hugely flawed, grossing US$146 million and US$217 million respectively.

They are only pipped on this list because one cannot rank Johnson’s flop movies without putting “Tooth Fairy” as number one.

In fact, I am going to include “The Game Plan” and “Central Intelligence” as honourable mentions.

Gujarat's first Omicron case detected in Jamnagar – Sify News

Gandhinagar, Dec 4 (IANS) Gujarat on Saturday registered first Omicron case after a Zimbabwe resident, who arrived in Jamnagar, was found infected with Covid-19’s new mutant.

The Nodal officer for Corona, GG Hospital, Jamnagar, Dr S. Chatterjee told IANS: “Samples of the 72-year-old Zimbabwe resident sent to Biotechnological Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad tested positive for Omicron. The patient is in isolation since his admission. We had traced all his close contacts, screened them and they tested negative. But we will conduct the test of all his contacts once again.”

As he had returned from Zimbabwe, an African nation and one of the “at risk” countries identified by the authorities, his samples were sent to Ahmedabad for genome sequencing, which tested positive.

The man is believed to be a native of Jamnagar who has been living in Zimbabwe for many years.

He arrived on November 28 to meet his father-in-law. After he got a fever, his doctor advised him to get an RT-PCR test done. As mandated, the private laboratory informed the health authorities that his report was Covid-19 positive.

Zimbabwe to start administering booster doses as Omicron variant surfaces – Sify News

Harare, Dec 4 (IANS) Zimbabwe will start administering Covid-19 booster shots to frontline workers, people with chronic diseases, and the elderly with immediate effect, a senior Ministry of Health and Child Care official said on Friday.

The announcement came as the country on Thursday confirmed its first case of the Omicron variant that was detected in neighbouring South Africa last week, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Booster doses for frontline workers, those with chronic diseases and the elderly to commence with immediate effect,” Robert Mudyiradima, the acting secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, said in a statement.

Zimbabwean Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Constantino Chiwenga on Thursday confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant in the country.

Daily cases have begun to rise sharply over the past few days from 40 on Sunday to 1,042 on Thursday.

The country says it has acquired enough Covid-19 vaccines, mainly Chinese-made, to inoculate 60 per cent of the population to achieve herd immunity.

As of Thursday, 3,829,636 people had received their first dose and 2,851,625 their second dose.

Zimbabwe’s cumulative cases stand at 136,379 with 4,707 deaths.
