Pro-Man United Ugandan cops arrests Arsenal fans for celebrating … – The Zimbabwe Mail

Jinja-At least eight Arsenal fans have been arrested in the Ugandan city of Jinja after celebrating the club’s win against Manchester United in the English Premier League.

The fans were wearing the club’s red jersey and carrying a symbolic trophy.

Police said they didn’t have a permit to hold the procession which is a public order offence.

Arsenal scored a dramatic last-minute goal to win 3-2 in Sunday’s match against a fierce rival.

The result gave the Gunners a five-point cushion at the top of the table, giving hope to fans around the world that the club could end its 19-year wait to win the English Premier League.

The Arsenal fans were travelling in a convoy of five vehicles on Monday morning when they were intercepted by police. One of them was carrying a trophy they had bought at a local store.

“I don’t know what we have done but we were simply celebrating our victory over rivals Manchester United,” Arsenal fan Baker Kasule is quoted as saying by the local Daily Monitor news site.

James Mubi, the regional police boss and a self-declared Arsenal fan, told the BBC he had not reviewed the fans’ charges but wondered why they were celebrating when only half of the matches in the season had been played.

“What would happen if an altercation with rival fans broke out? They did not inform police to provide security for their procession,” Mr Mubi said, dismissing the suggestion that the arrest was linked to the frequent arrest of members of an opposition party who also wear red.

Rights groups say the Public Order Management Act has given police discretionary powers that have been used to stifle citizens’ rights.

Agather Atuhaire, a lawyer and rights activist, told the BBC that Uganda’s police continue “to be high-handed even after the Constitutional Court nullified all the draconian provisions that gave them unfettered powers to restrict the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association and assembly”.

Arsenal and Manchester United enjoy huge support in Uganda, and across Africa, and when they play makeshift video halls in Uganda are always packed to the rafters.

Beaty eighth grader wins countywide spelling bee | News, Sports, Jobs – timesobserver.com

Chase May of Youngsville Middle School spells a word on his way to a third-place tie in the 2023 Warren County Spelling Bee Wednesday at Beaty-Warren Middle School.

The 2023 Warren County Spelling Bee featured 15 amazing spellers from all over Warren County.

It was exciting, even exhilarating at times, until, in the end, Beaty-Warren Middle School eighth-grader Vance Darr was ordained champion.

From the beginning, spellers whizzed overtly through the words posed to them by moderator Kelli Knapp, executive director of Warren Public Library.

Some of the spellers had special rituals they went through at the microphone as they spelled out words in front of judges Todd Mineweaser of Youngsville Borough Police, John Papalia of Warren County Chamber of Business and Industry, and Brandon Deppen of Warren County School District.

As the rounds went on, there was a subsidence of the pool of spellers. Two spellers’ days went defunct in round three. Four were knocked out in the fifth round, and three more in the sixth. The seventh and eighth rounds each claimed spellers. With four remaining, there was a break until two – Chase May of Youngsville Middle School on telenovelas and Libbey VanHouten of Eisenhower Middle School on preternaturally – were eliminated in the eleventh round.

At the beginning of the event, organizers announced the third-place ties would be broken by drawing for high card. At the end of the event, because they had been eliminated in the same round and were in third place, VanHouten and May returned to the stage for that draw. VanHouten pulled a jack to May’s 6 to claim third place.

The finalists, Darr and Liam Ferry, both of Beaty-Warren Middle School, went head-to-head for six rounds – advancing past words like mullioned, architrave, parathas, roulette, undine, sackbuts, hurdy gurdy, and Zimbabwe.

In the seventeenth round, Darr correctly spelled Vesuvian, while Ferry was tripped up by urad.

Darr had to successfully spell one more word to win the championship. He did so, managing Sikhism.

“I have a good memory,” Darr said when asked why he was so good in the bee.

He said he spent about 30 minutes a night memorizing the words on the list provided to all the spellers and felt good with all the words.

For winning the bee, Darr is eligible to attend the Western Pennsylvania Spelling Bee at Robert Morris University.

He is unsure how he will compare to the other spellers there, but he said he has high hopes.

Darr also won a $200 prize from the Times Observer and a $100 prize from Northwest Bank.

Ferry received a $75 gift card from Northwest and will be the county’s alternate for the Western Pennsylvania event.

VanHouten received a $50 gift card from Northwest.

Organizer Tiffany Mandeville was impressed by all of the competitors.

“Those kids are awesome spellers,” she said. “It was pretty amazing.”

MDC-T Break-away Group: “Our Party Currently Doesn’t Have … – pindula.co.zw

MDC-T Break-away group, led by Elias Mudzuri and other suspended members, has said the party led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora currently does not have the capacity to rebuild Zimbabwe.

The group made the remarks during a press conference held in Harare on Thursday 02 February 2023. Said the group:

We do not think that we do have a party that can actually do the job for us to bring true liberation to Zimbabweans who are suffering, you know economic problems we are facing.

The group said there is a need for the opposition MDC-T to reorganise and restructure and put the right people for the right decisions to be made.

The break-away party consists of Mudzuri, Norest Marara, Gift Konjana, John Nyika, Den Moyo, Edwin Dzambara, and Edwin Kakora who were suspended from the MDC-T last month allegedly for breaking party rules, having illegal meetings, and undermining the democratic procedures of the organisation.

Following the suspension, Mudzuri vowed to resist expulsion saying Mwonzora can only expel him on paper.

There has been a leadership crisis in the MDC-T since the 26 March 2022 by-elections in which the party did not win a single seat.

Some members of the MDC-T blame leader Senator Douglas Mwonzora for the loss and they hoped he would be replaced during the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress held at the City Sports Centre in Harare on Sunday, 18 December 2022.

However, the MDC-T endorsed Mwonzora as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

Mudzuri and colleagues say the congress must be declared null and void because Mwonzora did not follow due process.
