Ex New Zealand international Corey Anderson is set to miss the 50-over World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe next month after USA selectors chose to retain the 14 man squad that toured Namibia in March. The 32-year-old Anderson, who once held the record for the fastest ton in men’s ODI cricket, became eligible for a USA call up earlier this year after he moved base from Auckland to Dallas in March 2020.
Also surplus to requirements were former India A and India U19 wicketkeeper Smit Patel and former Eagles all rounder Shadley Van Schalkwyk, recipient of 97 first class caps.
Apart from the addition of left-arm fast bowler Abhishek Paradkar as the 15th man, USA selectors chose to stick to the squad that rallied to book a berth at the World Cup Qualifiers after an average show in their World Cup League 2 campaign.
USA roped in Paradkar after a 20-month hiatus from the national team, with his last outing going way back to September 2021. Monank Patel will continue to lead the team and form the bulwark of USA batting, in addition to deputy Aaron Jones and Steven Taylor. Teenage prodigy, Sai Teja Mukkamalla, is expected to retain his place at the top of the order after an unbeaten match winning hundred against the UAE.
USA will be left without the services of their spearhead Ali Khan in the first two games owing to his two-match suspension that was imposed during his career-defining 7 for 32 against Jersey. Left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar, Kyle Phillip, Jasdeep Singh form the remaining pace options. Central to their tactics over the years, USA went spin heavy yet again with three specialist spin options in Nisarg Patel, Nosthush Kenjige and Usman Rafiq.
USA are expected to depart on June 3 for a preparatory camp in Zimbabwe ahead of their big game against the West Indies on June 18.

Dubai: Veteran UAE pacer Zahoor Khan is looking forward to the ICC World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe as the conditions will be ideal for him to use his main weapon, reverse swing.
The 34-year-old pacer, a death-over specialist in the Twenty20 internationals, has been one of the main factors for UAE finishing second in the World Cup Qualifier Playoff table in Namibia on Wednesday and rightfully cement their team a place in the 10-team ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers to be held in Zimbabwe in June.
Perfect conditions
“In Twenty20, I usually bowl in the death, between the 15th and 20th overs. During those matches I was not able to use my main weapon, the reverse swing, which generally happens after 20 overs. In Namibia, I was able to bring my weapon into the play in the 50-over matches and the conditions were also really conducive for reverse swing. Out of the 10 wickets I got in the World Cup Qualifier Playoff, eight of them were due to reverse swing, either bowled or LBW,” said Zahoor, who developed his game in Pakistan. “I have played in Zimbabwe earlier and I know the conditions well. I can expect a lot of reverse swing.”
Zahoor, who used to bowl around 45 overs in the four-day games, feels those spells have helped him to develop the required strength that has held him in good stead today. The pacer still savours the success the team achieved in Namibia, which also helped them retain their One Day International status.
Team unity
“We played in Namibia as one unit. Each and every player had the fire in them to take UAE qualify for Zimbabwe Qualifiers and also retain the ODI status. The entire team was motivated with the aim of winning the tournament. I am happy to be part of the winning squad,” he added.

Franchise league experience
UAE will be meeting Sri Lanka in the World Cup Qualifiers opener in Zimbabwe and the pacer is ready for the challenge and expects his experience of playing in the Lanka Premier League will help him.
“I have been playing a lot of leagues including Lanka Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, T10 and UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20). So I will use those experience,” added Zahoor, who played under Kieron Pollard for MI Emirates in ILT20.
Mentor’s role
“I have been playing with some of the best for the last seven years and had a good relationship. It has helped me a lot and particularly Pollard knew my strength and used me to the best of my abilities. I would like to thank Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for organising such a big league, which can benefit a lot of young players.”
Since making his debut in 2017 Zahoor has been the main bowler for UAE, but now as the senior bowlers he has assumed the role of a mentor to young UAE pacers, who will be facing West Indies in the three-match One Day Internationals in Sharjah from June 4.
“All the new bowlers — Sanchit Sharma, Matiullah, Muhammad Jawadullah and Sabir Ali — share a good rapport. They keep asking me about reverse swing and I share my knowledge with them,” he added.

They had beaten Pakistan, England, and the West Indies during the 2007, 2011, and 2015 ODI World Cups and had again defeated England during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie has admitted that defeating England in a Test match “would be one of their best achievement” as they prepare to face the Ben Stokes-led team at Lords in a one-off Test which begins from June 1. The Irish cricket team has made an impressive reputation in white ball cricket recently.
They had beaten Pakistan, England, and the West Indies during the 2007, 2011, and 2015 ODI World Cups and had again defeated England during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Ireland has played just six Test matches in their cricketing history and is still aiming for their first win in the longest format of the game.

They played their last Test match at Lords four years ago and got England all out at 85 and then lost to them by 143 runs as they got all out at 38 during the fourth innings of the match.
“It didn’t play out the way we wanted to but we got a glimpse into what would happen if we were to win a Test,” Balbirnie told reporters ahead of the one-off Test.
“And, I think if we were to beat England, it would easily be our best achievement in cricket in the game”, he added.

England has an upper edge as they have won 10 of their 12 last Test matches ever since Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum led charge of England’s Test team.
“We know that this England team is in a really good place leading to the Ashes,” said Balbournie.
Josh Little, who played for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 will not be playing the one-off Test match against England as he has been given rest so that he can prepare for next month’s ODI World Cup qualifying tournament, which will be held in Zimbabwe.

Josh also didn’t play the Test matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka due to IPL 2023.
Richard Holdsworth, who is Ireland’s high-performance director, came in support of Josh Little in skipping playing the Test match at the Lords, which is considered a major landmark for most cricketers, but Holdsworth admitted that it was not “the most important event for Ireland cricket this year”.
