El Niño to trigger drought insurance payouts in Zimbabwe

Spread This News

Bloomberg

A drought driven by the El Nino weather pattern is likely to trigger insurance payouts to four southern African countries who took out cover with an agency of the African Union.

Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique will receive payments at the end of the harvesting season, according to current projections, African Risk Capacity said in a statement.

El Nino, which brings dry and hot weather to Southern Africa, has decimated harvests of corn across the region. Zimbabwe is expected to harvest about 60% less of the regional staple this year than it did in 2023 and together with Malawi and Zambia has declared a national state of disaster.

Still, the payments are unlikely to meet regional needs as disbursements to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in 2022 totaled $20.9 million. This year’s payments are yet to be disclosed.

The agency known as ARC uses a parametric insurance model, which triggers drought compensation payments according to the impact of timing, amount and distribution of rainfall. ARC also provides cover for cyclones and river floods.

The Lady Chevrons dream of playing the 2024 Women’s World Cup which is scheduled for Bangladesh in September was shuttered on Wednesday with a 14-run defeat to the Netherlands at the ongoing World Cup Qualifier in the United Arab Emirates.

Lady Chevrons’ defeat was the third one at the tournament where they only managed one win over host United Arab Emirates.

Zimbabwe succumbed to its other two defeats in the hands of minor Vanuatu and Ireland.

Starting with fielding after losing the toss, Zimbabwe started strong as they eliminated the Oranges’ top bats lady Iris Zwilling early, however, this was not enough as other batters came to the party, helping the side to push for 136 runs for 6 wickets.

A poor performance with the bat once again cost Lady Chevrons who failed to chase 136, as they were restricted to 121 runs in 20 overs.

Batters Modester Mupachikwa and Josephine Nkomo did well for Zimbabwe as they posted 39 runs which somehow was not enough as the Netherlands countered by grabbing three wickets inside the Powerplay.

In the other group B match played Ireland progressed to the semi-finals with a 9 wickets win over Vanuatu on Wednesday evening, joining Sri Lanka who also made it through in group A after beating Uganda by 67 runs.

In the semi-finals group A number one faces group B number 2 while Group B number One plays group A number 2.

The tournament will see the top two teams occupying the remaining two slots at the 2024 T20 World Cup to be played in Bangladesh this September.

Two illegal forex traders denied bail – 63 others remain in custody

By Staff Reporter

Two of the 65 suspected money changers have had their bail hearing concluded and were denied bail by Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera.

The other 63 remain in custody as the State still intends to call the evidence of the investigating officers in their cases.

Ruling on remaining cases will be handed down from Thursday onwards.

Those denied bail on Tuesday are Elliot Mavhura and Francis Kaunda.

The magistrate said bail is now a “Constitutional right” but the two should remain locked up because they are facing a serious offence.

The suspects are appearing before Chichera and Dennis Mangosi Mangosi respectively.

They are accused of contravening the Exchange Control Act.

The 65 were arrested after the police launched a blitz a few days after the Finance minister, Mthuli Ncube vowed to clamp down on illegal forex dealers.

They all deny the allegations.

Some insist they were involved in a dragnet arrest and have nothing to do with forex trading.
