Mediacorp wins 19 awards at New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2024, including five golds – CNA

SINGAPORE: Mediacorp won 19 awards at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2024, including five golds.

The company also took home five silver and nine bronze awards, it said in a media release on Thursday (Apr 18).

These were among the 57 accolades which Mediacorp achieved, with the company also securing 38 finalist honours.

The accolades were largely in recognition of documentary and current affairs programmes by CNA, as well as drama content, Mediacorp said on Thursday.

CNA secured four golds, two silvers, three bronzes and 17 finalist honours.

One of the gold awards went to CNA’s The Exiles, which came out tops in the Documentary – History & Society category. Spotlighting an era of racially motivated deportations from post-World War II United Kingdom and Australia, the documentary follows the descendants of those deported as they reflect on seismic events from the past which still resonate today.

CNA’s The Last Defenders of India also took gold in the Documentary – Social Justice category. Produced by Peddling Pictures, it explores Asia’s forests, mountains and seas, highlighting how endangered wildlife is poached and plundered.

Undercover Asia – CNA’s award-winning investigative series – snagged a gold in the Documentary – Health/Medical Information category for its episode on Tainted Medicine Scandal. Produced by Blue Petal Films, the documentary takes a closer look at one of Asia’s tainted medicine scandals, which resulted in the deaths of 300 children in 2022 and 2023 after they consumed cough syrup.

CNA’s current affairs series, Reaching the Unreached: The Doctor For The Nomads, also took the top spot in the Craft Program – Direction category. The series produced by Kraken Films zooms in on the issue of high healthcare inequality in Asia and tells the stories of nomadic doctors who bring healthcare to some of the most rural and unreachable communities.

The final gold won was awarded to JUO Studio’s After Dark Season 2 – Skin Deep, a horror anthology series which took home the prize in the special visual effects category.

Mediacorp CEO Tham Loke Kheng congratulated all the winning teams and said: “The 57 accolades conferred this year is a strong validation of Mediacorp’s strength in producing quality content with global appeal, and is testament to the creative and production excellence of our talents here in Singapore.”

“We are deeply honoured that the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards continues to acknowledge the stellar work of our colleagues and partners.”

Former Masvingo Mayor Reported For Attempted Murder By A ZNU PF Activist Who Allegedly Assaulted Him – pindula.co.zw

Delight Mandebvu, the ZANU PF Masvingo Provincial Youth chairperson who allegedly assaulted former Masvingo Mayor, Collen Maboke, about two months ago, has reported the latter for attempted murder.

According to The Mirror, Mandebvu is facing three counts of assault and one of negligent driving after he was involved in an accident with Maboke’s vehicle on March 3, 2024.

Surprisingly, it took Mandebvu eight weeks to report his attempted murder case. He only reported the case after the Police served him with a summons to appear in court for assault.

He will be appearing in court next Wednesday.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Masvingo Province Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Mirror that he needed to look for the report.

Mandebvu is alleged to have said Maboke broke his leg when he attempted to run over him with his car. He said he had an altercation with Maboke after their cars side-swiped about 50km from Masvingo along Masvingo-Mutare Highway.

Efforts by The Mirror to get a comment from Mandebvu were futile as his mobile phone went unanswered, while Maboke referred the publication to the Police.

In the incident that resulted in Maboke reporting Mandebvu, the latter was driving from Masvingo towards Bikita at night and had a side-swipe with a vehicle that was being driven by Maboke’s wife Tariro. Maboke was a passenger in the vehicle.

Mandebvu allegedly made a U-turn and drove after Maboke’s vehicle and blocked it after 10km. He allegedly assaulted Maboke, his wife and his relative Simbarashe Matyei, who was also a passenger in the vehicle.

It is alleged that during the altercation that ensued in the middle of the highway, an oncoming vehicle struck Mandebvu’s leg and Maboke managed to jump off the road thereby escaping being hit.

Mandebvu was reported to Masvingo Rural Police Station and a docket was opened against him for assault and negligent driving.

It is further alleged that Police were surprised when Mandebvu reported attempted murder charges after being served with the court date.

The Mirror reported sources as saying there was an unwillingness on the part of the Police to open a docket until the case was transferred to the Law and Order Section.

It is not uncommon for complainants who raise allegations of ZANU PF violence to be subsequently labelled as accused and arrested by the police. Consequently, acts of violence committed against opposition members often go unreported.

Mandebvu has a notorious record with the law. He was once arraigned before the courts for stock theft (later cleared), disorderly conduct and taking the law into his own hands, indebtedness and child maintenance.

FKA Twigs reveals she has created an AI clone – but condemns unauthorised deepfakes – Sky News

FKA Twigs has revealed she has created an AI version of herself to engage with fans and help with promotion.

The British singer-songwriter and dancer gave details of the project as she addressed a US Senate intellectual property hearing regarding the No Fakes Act, which aims to crack down on unauthorised replicas.

FKA Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett, confirmed she had been developing her own AI – but condemned unauthorised deepfakes, saying they leave her feeling “raw and vulnerable”.

The hearing was held in Washington on Tuesday, just hours before the release of a UK report which found that most of the public want regulation to prevent deepfakes of big-name artists such as Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift.

Speaking at the US hearing, FKA Twigs said she had been developing a digital clone of herself over the past year, revealing that it can speak multiple languages.

“I’ve done this to be able to reach more of my fans and to be able to speak to them in the nuance of their language,” she said. “I’ve currently explored French, Korean and Japanese, which is really exciting for me. It means that even with my upcoming album I can really explain in depth what it’s about creatively.”

The 36-year-old said having an AI version of herself also allows her to “spend more time making art”.

She continued: “Often being a music artist, or any artist in this day and age, requires a lot of press and a lot of promo, a lot of one-liners.

“So it means if it’s something simple that doesn’t really require my heart, I can do a one-liner and give it to people to promote a piece of work and, you know, it’s harmless but ultimately I can spend more time making something that’s really meaningful for my fans.”

‘I am a human being, and we have to protect that’

Addressing unauthorised deepfakes, she told the hearing about songs and collaborations with other artists that exist online, which she had nothing to do with.

“The fact that somebody could take my voice, change lyrics, change messaging, maybe work with an artist that I didn’t want to work with, or maybe work with an artist that I wanted to work with and now the surprise is ruined, it really leaves me very raw and very vulnerable,” she said.

The star called for legislation to protect artists and added: “My spirit, my artist and my brand is my brand, and I’ve spent years developing it.

“And it’s mine, it doesn’t belong to anybody else to be used in a commercial sense, or cultural sense, or even just for a laugh. I am me, I am a human being, and we have to protect that.”

Unacknowledged AI music: Is it theft?

Meanwhile, a poll by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Music has found that 83% of UK adults agree that a music artist’s creative “personality” should be protected in law against AI copies.

The research involving more than 2,000 adults also found that 83% agree with the statement that if AI has been used to generate a song it must be clearly labelled, and 77% believe it amounts to theft when generated music fails to acknowledge the creator of the original.

APPG recommendations include the government introducing a UK AI Act, generated music being clearly labelled, the creation of a personality right to protect creators and artists from deepfakes, misappropriation and false endorsement, and setting up an international taskforce.

A government spokesperson said: “We are committed to helping artists and the creative industries work with the AI sector to harness the opportunities this technology provides, and ensure our music can continue to be enjoyed around the world.”

In April, more than 200 artists signed an open letter objecting to the “predatory” use of AI to “steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses”.
