Zimbabwe to adopt Belarus’ experience in medical education – СБ-Беларусь сегодня

The possibility of using Belarus’ experience in the field of medical education in Zimbabwe has been discussed during a visit of the delegation of this country to Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), the university press service reports

“The delegation of the Zimbabwean Ministry of Health and Child Care, which visited BSMU, included Minister Douglas Tendai Mombeshora, Permanent Secretary for Health Issues Aspect Maunganidze, Head of Zimbabwe’s diplomatic mission in Belarus Ignatius Graham Mudzimba, and embassy staff,” BSMU press secretary Oksana Kurbeko noted. “The guests were welcomed by BSMU Rector Sergei Rubnikovich and Vice Rector for International Relations Vasily Rudenok; the meeting was also attended by Belarus’ Deputy Healthcare Minister Boris Androsyuk, as well as representatives of the education and foreign ministries of our country.”

Mr. Rubnikovich presented BSMU capabilities. In turn, Douglas Tendai Mombeshora said that his country hopes to adopt Belarus’ experience in the field of healthcare, including medical education.

“We’re interested in both undergraduate and postgraduate education,” he underlined. “Zimbabwe has a long way to go to improve its own healthcare, including maternal and child health. By 2028, our state intends to double the number of medical personnel. Therefore, we are seeking for opportunities for citizens of Zimbabwe to receive higher medical education, and BSMU is viewed as one of the promising partners in this regard. With the support of Belarus’ leading medical university, we also want to improve our medical education system.”

He added that Zimbabwean health officials are also keen on scientific research of Belarusian colleagues, simulation training [it does not exist in this African state], issues of diagnosing diseases, etc.

“Mr. Rubnikovich noted that BSMU is open to co-operation with Zimbabwe across various directions, and the agreements reached at the level of the two heads of state have every chance of being implemented,” the BSMU press secretary explained.

A sightseeing tour of the university was also organised for guests from Zimbabwe with a visit to the simulation and certification centre, where they had an opportunity to get acquainted with the organisation of simulation training for would-be doctors.

Zimbabwe’s central bank kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at its first policy meeting since unveiling the gold-backed currency, the ZiG.

Governor John Mushayavanhu said in a statement that the monetary policy committee had held the rate at 20% after receiving positive market reaction to the new currency.

According to Mushayavanhu, the MPC expects currency reforms to help provide “stability, certainty and predictability in the exchange rate and inflation”.

The MPC also set the interest rate corridor at between 11% to 25%, Mushayavanhu said.

The southern African nation introduced ZiG, short for Zimbabwe Gold on 5 April. The currency is backed by 2.5 tons of gold and $100 million in foreign currency reserves held by the central bank. On the same day, the central bank reset interest rates from 130%, a world record, to 20%.
